Breeze of Death

Vultures circling in morning sky
what scent does the breeze carry
Is it death or an exercise
in teaching their young to be wary?
The kettle flying overhead
with a dance of aerial finesse
circling and signaling to the dead
don’t worry, we’ll clean this mess.
So the dead, now forever gone
will lay down in eternal rest
for all they leave are white bones
as the soul moves on to its quest.
Should the soul return to the world
in another era, lifetime, or place
If they see vultures’ wings unfurled
A vague memory will give chase.
Shivering they remember feeling displaced
seeing the stark features of death’s face.
