Warrior

She fought the gorgeous storm
with all her delicate strength
Spent and tired, at last she fell
giving in to the mighty wind.
Though her wings were fragile yet strong
she waged the battle but had little chance
against the tempest that swirled all around
and hearing the plaintive call of death’s song
she plummeted to earth amidst the squall.
I found her the day after
still life of beautiful death
with amber wings tattered
her butterfly soul moved on
she fought with such true courage
through the wild and glorious storm.

So fragile, so beautiful. And, sadly, such a short life span.

I love the incongruity of the title, Linda– I wouldn’t usually link a butterfly and a warrior. But having read your poem, the title fits! I enjoyed the lines:
‘Though her wings were fragile yet strong
she waged the battle but had little chance
against the tempest that swirled all around’
which put reminded me of Lilian Gish in the silent move ‘The Wind’.
And what a sad ending.

I do love the warrior in this… some butterflies really are courageous flying those distances.. migrating across vast distances… some just don’t make it…

Yes, especially the Monarchs. Our backyard is officially a waystation for them. We have a lot of desert milkweed growing and other nectar plants. Thanks Bjorn.

I must say that’s one of the most touching shorts stories I’ve ever read. You let us know that she fought an epic battle. 😦
