Living Left in a Right World

“I’m quite tired of beating myself up to write. I think I’ll start letting the words slip out like a tired child. “Can I have a piece of pie” he asks, and then he’s asleep back on the cusp of the moon.”Jim Harrison  Songs of Unreason

Learning to write with this tainted hand,
this limb of the devil that chose me
I want to tilt my paper, but I’m told no,
that’s not the RIGHT way to be.

I curve my hand into a grotesque claw
contorting it in fear I’ll smear
the words with black lead
but that’s not the way
so I decide to play
and forget about my lessons.
Instead I’ll have a piece of pie, and sing my made up song
“Come back to me baby, for I love you so,
Come back to me baby, to where you belong’
I’ll chase butterflies and let them play
with the flowers in my hair
and dream of the time
when my writing is fine
and I am rich and famous.

  1. Terrific first two lines. Very evocative. I really liked the song at the end, that was cool and gave the whole thing a rich, playful feel!
