Mis-Step

“I feel my failure intensely as if it were a vital organ.” Jim Harrison
I searched for you today but it seems you’ve gone away,
leaving naught but stepping-stones of failure in your wake
for we were but a beautiful mistake.

I tried to say the right words, be everything you expected
but you left me anyway, hungry for your affection
as love’s done so many times, leaving me dejected.

The stars no longer shine, the moon no longer glows
in this void of emptiness, where bitter tears flow
nothing flourishes here, for hope no longer grows.

So I walk this shadowy path now that we’re apart
plodding on the fallen love, once a work of treasured art
now vanished in the fissured cracks of my broken heart.

  1. You captured the acute pain with these words “….in this void of emptiness, where bitter tears flow…” ..and many more. The spirit of Harrison lives on!

  2. This is absolutely lovely! I love how you describe confusion and feeling of betrayal when a heart is broken. The pain is fresh and palpable in your verse. 💜
