Lioness

I thought I was fearful until that fateful day
when courage burst forth with a roar to save
a beautiful brave little dog,
who loves so much he’d die
went up against an enemy
half his age and thrice his weight
to protect me with his life.

The lioness inside me found her mighty strength
refusing to give up her cub, refusing to let the other win.

Though we’re both bruised, scarred, and bloody
and the mental burden heavy,
I’ve learned and now we both know
I have the inner courage to give up my life as well.

For Poetics night, at D’Verse  Mish has asked us to take a character out of the Wizard of Oz and write about them. I chose the cowardly lion.

Author’s Note: I had a horrific experience on Tuesday. On our morning walk, a larger dog broke free from its owner and attacked my little chihuahua terrier mix.  It was unbelievable and happened so quick, yet I will forever play it in slow motion in my head.
I fought; my pup fought harder. I ended up falling down into the street (not sure how but I think the dog may have hit the back of my legs), landing on my left side (nothing broken, thank God), and my brave little dog had to have surgery.
We are both slowly healing, but I had to write about it. I cry even as I write this.

  1. As a mother, whether it is a child or a four legged baby, our instinct is to protect and save regardless of the danger. Take care of yourself and your little one.

  2. I’m so sorry you and your little pup suffered this horrific experience that happens all too often. I’ve stopped walking my dog because too many dogs are loose or on the leash of or responsible people who can not control their dogs. I hope your brave little dog heals soon I’m glad you were not serious injured. ♥️
