These Eyes

And my darling when these eyes cry in the night for you
do you awaken, does your soul take flight to caress away my blues?

Do you come and lay your head upon my tender breast,
hearing the pounding of my spirit as it beats with weariness?

And when at last my heart is at rest, do you slip away through time
back to the place from whence you came, back to when you were mine?

My heart you broke long ago, and though I can’t forgive
I’ll love you in blackest of nights for as long as I breathe and live

And though we’ll never touch again, I’ll remember your soul
for it is woven within my own, and together we were whole.

  1. Very nice lines about loving even though one can’t forgive. Perhaps that is what keeps the remembrance alive. I also like how souls are “woven” together at the end.

  2. I love the idea of the souls coming together in the blackest night, no matter what promises were broken between the two. Lovely!

  3. There is a saying “The rain won’t stop until you put your umbrella away”. May sunshine be in your future!

  4. I love your last stanza – the idea that even though you are no longer together, your souls woven together were what once made each of you whole.

  5. Yes, the last stanza is beautifully heartbreaking and speaks to the depths of which love can consume us. To feel as if one is no longer whole – this I understand. Haunting and Beautiful.

  7. Such a sorrowful poem, Linda, and full of longing. I love the lines:
‘I’ll love you in blackest of nights for as long as I breathe and live’
    and
‘…though we’ll never touch again, I’ll remember your soul
for it is woven within my own, and together we were whole’.

  8. Oh, I totally get this. You’ve expressed an ambivalent feeling toward someone so well. And “These Eyes” is the perfect companion for it.
