Autumn Essence

Tasting golden sun of Autumn on
these trembling lips, soothing my soul
spectral shadows dance with light
in the whispering wind
halting my cloud breath
stunning music
envelops
as leaves
fall

burnt
umber
bronze shades in
orange marmalade
honey on wheat toast
sweet apple butter spread
on steamy hot spice muffins
as essence of cinnamon fills
air with aroma of coming home

  2. I love your delicious reverse nonet, Linda. I especially like the internal and half-rhymee in the lines:
    ‘bronze shades in
    orange marmalade
    honey on wheat toast
    sweet apple butter spread
    on steamy hot spice muffins’.
    The essence of coming home!

  3. What a simply gorgeous autumn poem, with the flavours seeming at first like metaphors for the colours and then clearly the essence of autumn in their own right. And a nice way of turning the poem at the one-syllable centre lines. Love it!

  4. I mostly do free verse but this reverse nonet is calling my name. I love the images you’ve created within the structure of the poem. It stimulates the eyes as well as the ears and the tongue. True talent in your words!

  5. Ah, this is so sensory — the colors, the smells, the food, et al. create such a wonderful setting. I also loved the dance of the spectral shadows and the light in the whispering wind. A delightful read.
