Crux

And this is the crux, the heart of the matter
even a fractured spirit can love, can feel
though the soul may be in pieces, shattered

As frayed remnants are cast off and scattered
it becomes possible for one damaged to heal
and this is the crux, the heart of the matter

Amidst all the clamoring cries and clatter
take a moment to bow, to pray and kneel
though the soul may be in pieces, shattered

In grace, there will be the clear answer
for your tragic fate is not forever sealed
and this is the crux, the heart of the matter

With vigor, embrace uplifting laughter
and understand life is not always ideal
when the soul is in pieces, shattered

When all the tears are over in the days after
fill your bright new life with hopeful zeal
for this is the crux, the heart of what matters
even though your soul was once broken, shattered

Author’s Note: It’s been a while since I wrote a Villanelle. We willbe working with the form for the next month at dVerse. Come give it a try!

  1. This is excellent. The repeating lines are wonderful, and I love that subtle change in the final quatrain. The repetitions feel really natural. It’s a lovely piece.

  2. I like the way your Villanelle starts in the middle of something, as if I’ve walked into a conversation at the most important moment. You’ve done well with the rhyming and the repeated lines work well.
