A Walk in the Park

Red Mountain Park- Mesa, AZ

Walking the path round the lake this bright early morn
Songbirds are singing while chipmunks scurry and dart
as squirrels freeze on the trail, shake their tails then run

A few people are fishing, and the lake looks serene
no jumping fish it’s still, with only an occasional ripple
from a swimming American Wigeon’s wake- stream

A sudden wind brushes the broad body of water
it shimmers like glass gleaming in the brilliant sunlight
as the shadow of a hawk up high trembles on fluttering waters

Under a tree near the path, two crows are having a talk
the male begins his ritual dance, with black tail feathers spread
hoping to catch her eye with his flirty flamboyant walk

Though this is a city park, with the lake man-made and stocked
all kinds of animals flourish here near the dry scrubby washes
for fresh water is the magic lure in a desert that’s landlocked.

  3. A wonderful walk, Linda! Such delightful sights captured in this scenic verse — I love the shadow of hawk trembling in the water. And the last line does bring to foray the idea of an oasis. 🙂

  10. I feel like I was walking with you. I particularly like the way you captured the freeze and flight of the squirrel. I’ve seen that so often, it gave me a little jolt of recognition.

  11. Wonderful walk Linda. The park looked charming. I loved the sudden zephyr that roppled the lake! With my second offering today I too did a walk around a lake. A wilderness lake high in the cascade Mountains.

  13. Thank you for taking us along on your walk. I liked how you described the squirrels so perfectly, and I loved the crows. The photo makes the lake look so cool and inviting. I’m sure it does attract a lot of wildlife.
