So I Sleep

“Darkness came, full of moths and beetles. I was oppressed by the velvety emptiness of the word and swathes of soft grass. Then the fumes of the night put me to sleep.”- Laurie Lee

Night’s ink spills into my haunted garden
while torchlights flicker in the anxious wind
I sit alone sipping a glass of wine, listening
to rasping cries of lonesome crickets calling

I ponder what brought them and I to this ‘in limbo’ fate
of being forever alone yet not, crooning a mournful song
Emptiness echoes in the silence and sends my soul drifting
dreaming of you again falling in fragrant petals, and so I sleep

  1. well you certainly did some magic with Lee’s prose – I particularly liked your adjectives – haunted garden; anxious wind; falling (in) fragrant petals
p.s. good to hear your voice too – in both senses of the word
