Without a Prayer

“Acts of creation are ordinarily reserved for gods and poets, but humbler folk may circumvent this restriction if they know how. To plant a pine, for example, one need be neither god nor poet; one need only own a shovel.”

― Aldo Leopold

Did you hear zephyr talking to the trees
swirling all around, never touching ground?
As it whispered to the exquisite leaves
Wind marveled at their roots, being earthbound
Limbs answered the wind with words to astound
We are the givers of life here on earth
For without us, there would have been no birth
Of every creature who breathes your sweet air
So do you now see our value and worth
For without us the world hasn’t a prayer.

  1. I love trees, and love your lovely poem giving them voice; love the dialogue between wind and trees, and the affirmation of the trees’ importance and far-reaching effects even though each is rooted in one place. As a species it seems we are hard of hearing when it comes to this message! So it must be good for poets to keep translating and sharing it. And oh, how good your opening quote! Lovely photo, too … and you seem perfectly at ease with the form.

  2. Second poet to use trees out here on the trail; excellent choice, and you aced the form. This piece would have worked for the Tuesday prompt as well; very eco-friendly

  3. Those first 4 lines Linda touch my heart, so gentle, this conversation between two of nature’s royalty. I love the quote about planting trees also. Excellent diquain!

  4. Linda, I went out and took pictures of the 6 small-but-growing trees today that I will be posting soon. I also took a video of the wind and the trees “talking” today. This is synchronicity if there ever was.

  5. I love the way the wind ‘marveled at their roots, being earthbound’, Linda. I always enjoy poems about trees and the final line of your Dizain is so true.
