Soul Speak

Quiet the mind, and the soul will speak. –Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati

With a gentle tap of the tiny mallet
the iron bell rings, echoing
a long soothing note drifting on air
until the next soft strike
for to begin and end the meditation
Ring the temple bell in threes.

Breath is but a part of it,
the stilling of the raucous mind
an anxious heart should slow
to a steady thrumming
and enter the realm of divine
to hear the soul whisper.

Abstract ideas may come
and go like waters flowing
over and around worn weathered rocks
honor your thoughts, then let them go
like the deep green river flowing
be the heavy river stone,
buried in cool wet earth.

With awareness of every deep breath,
a brilliant sacred light shines from within
your soul will provide answers you seek
to soothe your tormented heart
and fill it with tranquil peace.

  1. How lovely to have that meditation time and space. I breathe your words in specially:

honor your thoughts, then let them go
like the deep green river flowing

    • Thank you for your thoughtful words Toni. I love the outdoors too, but alas it’s too hot to be outdoors right now. My meditation room is my back-up when I can’t meditate outside.

  2. guided meditation in such fine lines –
    “be the heavy river stone,
    buried in cool wet earth.”

I shall remember this next time – thanks for that and this engaging prompt

  4. Zen mind sets can provide succor and peace. Senator McCain once said that the only way of defeating torture was to learn to love, to be the rope.

  5. I haven’t meditated in many years, Linda, but I remember the steady thrumming of the heart and the whispering of the soul. These lines remind me that I should start again:
    ‘Abstract ideas may come
    and go like waters flowing
over and around worn weathered rocks’
    and
    ‘be the heavy river stone,
    buried in cool wet earth’.

  6. I loved the beginning with that small cast iron bell. Right away it placed me into the small country school where I learned, grades 1-8. Our teacher was awarded two bells, both sat on her desk. First a hand bell to call us in from outside, or give a warning, perhaps three or five minutes that recess was about to end and for us to finish up outside activities and be ready to come inside for lessons. Our school was one room, 20-some desks, eight kids most years (four of us were cousins), no A/C, a wood stove.
    I too like your lines,
honor your thoughts, then let them go
like the deep green river flowing.
    .”
The word, “Honor”, is a huge one, bigger in this context than even “‘Honor’ your parents …” Weigh, evaluate, compare, even keep or get rid, perhaps pray about, … ??
I have an example for the latter. A part of my testimony.

  7. This is incredibly deep and potent, Linda! I especially love; “Breath is but a part of it, the stilling of the raucous mind an anxious heart should slow to a steady thrumming and enter the realm of divine to hear the soul whisper.” 💖💖💖

PS: Sorry for being late .. was extremely unwell 😇
