Musings on Life, Love, and Linguine-Poetry & Writing
“The afternoon knows what the morning never suspected.”
― Robert Frost
We age onwards
through obscure dark
through unwavering light
always looking back
to the way we were.
But now there is no doubt
that life is running fast
sands in the hourglass
and we are running too
without any view or clues
of what we are running to.

Kenia Santos is guest hosting at Toads today and has asked we pick a song from the list and write an untitled poem. I chose ‘We Age Onwards – Circadian Eyes.’ Imaginary Garden With Real Toads: A Guest Appearance from Kenia Santos

I like what you’ve done with the title, Linda, and especially love the second stanza.

So true! Pretty music to go with your poem. Just a note on your post: I have to sign in with email, name, and website today for some reason. Another WP glitch….

Well, that’s quite odd. Perhaps there was an update?

It’s true, we all are running and yet, the only thing we are truly running out of, is time. Perhaps if we all slowed down and lived more in the present, we would be happier. A very thought-provoking poem, Linda!

Alas it seems the sand just runs faster and faster… the end is nearer than the beginning.

Sands through the hourglass, water over the dam…time speeds by so quickly now. Faster and faster.

Dear Lord, you make it all sound so pointless! Let’s all just celebrate the past and anticipate the future!!

Thank you for your thoughts. Sometimes the words fall where they want. I do celebrate the past- I would not change a thing in my life. All situations whether positive or negative are spiritual lessons for our soul’s growth.

Very good poem Linda! Aging brings with it a lot of questions… and perhaps a few anxious moments. You said it very well. since we don’t know the future, we can only look back…
always looking back
to the way we were.

I almost picked that title too, Linda. My poem is one of looking back for sure. I so loved yours. The sands are sifting more quickly each year, I find. Yikes.

Makes me think of all things vintage…I love vintage.
One line resonated strongest with me because it is me.
“through unwavering light
always looking back
to the way we were.”
I add to the view by wondering “who would I have been today if not for this, that, and the other thing?”
Loved it. 🙂

The bottom of the glass is like the top part, maybe their will be a turning, but the sands cannot touch that hand. Perhaps there will be a tangible embrace. Arrow of time one way. So glad we had part of it to stay, here for a grainsworth. My OLN also has a touch of time, moving too fast.

I love this so much. For me, it captures the pondering that comes as time begins to slip away. Maybe we have to take “towards” out of our vocabulary and truly live in the moment. Ignore the inevitable.

Geez, 50 comments. Now mine feels superfluous, but I wanted to say that this is definitely my new favorite of yours. I felt every word in the fabric of my life. Remember when, as a child, an hour seemed like forever? Now years fly by and I grab a cd from 1999 and think it is one of my “new” ones! Who knows what tomorrow brings? not me, but I’m gonna be there with bells on just the same.

Thank you Shay. Your words mean so much to me. I know, some days I’m like- my lord, it’s August already? It was just January yesterday- lol. Me too – no idea what happens but it can’t be changed. So may as well go with the flow.

Blindly we dance through the masquerade ball, never really knowing who or what is behind the masks, theirs or ours, and never knowing when the dance ends, who arranged it, nor why it was ever held. Yet on and on we dance…
