Musings on Life, Love, and Linguine-Poetry & Writing
“Everybody is waiting for cooler weather–and I am just waiting for you–. (Bob Dylan in a letter)”
― Suze Rotolo, A Freewheelin’ Time: Greenwich Village in the Sixties, Bob Dylan and Me
After a while, waiting becomes easier to bear
for when one knows not when or if it will ever end,
then the agony of waiting becomes a part of you.
So with patience and unwavering faith, you wait
day after day after day after day ~
for the glance, the familiar smile, the briefest touch.
You wait, for the chance to be that someone again who
is the light in his tortured darkness, and the reason
for the flickering flame in his beautiful eyes.
You wait, to be the only one who can quiet the howling beast,
to offer some much deserved comforting peace
and ease his trapped soul during bouts of vicious rage.
You wait, to be the inspiration for the eloquent words he scrawls
in moments of clarity, when the poet within the broken man
emerges and pours forth onto the blank page.
And each day, you wait, wait, wait and with passionate tears, pray
that today will be the day when he at last meets your gaze
and remembers your loving face.

Enjoyed this. Dylan also said, “Take care of all your memories, for you cannot relive them.”

The ending transformed a sad romantic poem into a sadder reality punch in the plexus. I enjoyed the ride, and choked up at all the right places.

The first stanza set me up for the rest of the poem, Linda, it’s so true, and each stanza took me closer to a place that broke my heart. The repetition of ‘you wait’ emphasises the brevity of the flashes of clarity in the smile, the eyes and the eloquent words. I’m choked up.

You describe that limbo really well. I wonder if things will change? I hope so, but at the end, I wondered if this was permanent, and then when I read your coda, I realised it was. It’s hard to imagine a sadder end to a relationship than that.
