Little Grey Mockingbird

“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” ― Harper Lee,To Kill a Mockingbird

I hear you singing spreading joy
Even in these worst of pandemic times
When my heart is heavy and full of grief
For those who are fallen and gone
This world around me, so filled with pain
Is sometimes more than my soul can bear

Yet here you are every sunlit morning
Singing even if no one is listening
A joyous melody dancing on spring air
So little grey mockingbird I hope you see
As you lift your voice in lilting song
You make this earth a happier place to be

  1. I’ve been reading so much about mockingbirds, Linda, I must find a recording on the Internet, I so want to hear what they sound like. I love that you start with the sound of singing, and the way you address the mockingbird directly; the contrast between the joy the bird spreads and the heart ‘heavy and full of grief’; and the return to sunlit mornings, joyous singing and the happier place.
