Musings on Life, Love, and Linguine-Poetry & Writing
I’ve always loved my birthday in spite of not having celebrated it as a child. It’s the day I came into this world and came to be.
The year I turned 55, I decided to throw myself a themed birthday party- I figured why not? The theme was Mad Men and everyone had to dress like that era. We served martinis and Tom Collins, and of course gin and tonics- any libation from that era. I made Hors d’oeuvres,- cold baby potatoes piped with sour cream and a dollop of black caviar, cold boiled shrimp, crudités, tiny quiche, a ham dip.
We played twister, listened to cocktail music, and had a Ouija board set up. At the end of the night, I sent each guest home with a CD of some of the music of the era. It remains one of my favorite memories.

That sounds like a fun birthday memory, and such a cool theme to do for the party. This is wonderfully expressed with evocative imagery and prose. So beautiful and heartfelt.

Another one of us with no childhood party memories – we should start a club. But I love the Mad Men themed 55th, Linda, great fun! I would like to try the cold baby potatoes piped with sour cream – minus the caviar. Dare I ask what happened with the Ouija board?

Funny you ask, we never got around to playing with it. But I have a couple of photos the board was in (that I didn’t post) that have this red aura about them! So maybe it was best-lol. Thank you Kim.

Kudos to you and an atta’ girl, for setting your birthday theme yourself. Growing up in the 50’s, it all seemed gray flannel up tight, Jim Crow, and cars with a 100 pounds of chrome on them. The 60’s were my favorite decade.

I agree that every birthday should be a big deal. Celebrate life….even if we are the ones to plan it. Loved the images of retro fun!

Nice work, Linda. I celebrated so few (& recall even fewer), this prompt proved problematic. But you served it up very well. Thanks.

WOW, luv the photos. Your party reminded me of when i was still working and those years when i would take the day off. Cook a pot of pelau. Make a salad and have some juices. The staff would then come to my home in batches during their lunch hour. Those were fun birthdays and i do have photos as well
Much🎂🍾🎂love
