Meganeura Spectrumus

Once we added the dimension of time to space, things got crazy. Plants went to war with giant bees, and flying monkeys stole the moon out of the sky. Night became day and down was up. All the clocks on planet earth went haywire with hands spinning backwards.
And now, this new creature has appeared and we can’t determine its exact species. His wingspan is 8 feet wide and appear to made of glowing iridescent crystal. As he flies, they refract light and send brilliant prisms into the atmosphere. He peers at us with gigantic purple eyes as his long thick body glides through the air with grace.
We look at him through the wrong end of the long telescope of time and ponder his presence. Is this magical creature here to save us, or does our fated death lie in his jagged mandibles?

  3. I absolutely love, love this! 💝 There is an unmistakable hint of dystopia in this stunning prose piece. I can visualize the monkeys stealing the moon and the night becoming day. Perhaps it’s necessary to leave time and space to their ways 🙂

  6. I love your sci-fi tale, Linda: the giant bees, flying monkeys (I’d love to know how they stole the moon!), and the giant dragonfly whose wings ‘appear to made of glowing iridescent crystal’. He does sound magical, but I’d stay clear of his jagged mandibles!

  9. I see this as prophetic, Linda. The way we tamper with nature trying to do one better, will backfire on us one day — if it already hasn’t! Despite the possible menacing nature of the new creature, it sounds so magnificent and beautiful.

  11. Yep – glad these critters are back down the timeline – along with all of Jurassic Park’s imaginings and DH Lawrence’s hummingbirds. But wait, what’s that swooping low over the Presidential dais? Great colourful fun.

  18. Creative and fun! Hopefully not prophetic, haha! Perhaps humans are the “we” in the beginning and our destruction of the order of time and space does lead to a chaos that is inescapable and our own demise. I like the ending though with the question of whether we are actually being saved and not killed. The perspective in what we see being so important!

  20. WOW! Just WOW! A wonderful science fiction/fantasy tale. The “creature” is described so vividly…and the last line “Is this magical creature here to save us, or does our fated death lie in his jagged mandibles?” is amazing!!! Those two words “jagged mandibles” are the topper! WOW!
