Early Morning in the Garden

This morning as a bright autumn sun
peeks through meandering smoky clouds
I ramble through my ancient garden,
delighting in the budding roses
finally recovering from desert heat

I search for lime green praying mantis
who are abundant this time of year
I watch them spread their razored arms
in prayer towards turquoise heavens
lost in reverent meditation

I see tender sprouts of gay wildflowers
pushing up through rocky grained sand
as blue belly lizards chase black beetles
crawling on grey stone walls while they
run away from water sprinkling flowerbeds

  1. This is incredibly heart-stirring, Linda 😀 my heart jumped with joy at the image of those roses recovering from the heat. This Autumn has proved to be a turning point for us all 💝 💝

  2. Vivid – perhaps the obvious word here – but vivid it is – and has the feeling not so much ancient as pre-historic – I could imagine a huge hummingbird or some 10 foot chameleon pushing through the undergrowth – and that mad mantis photo. Wonderful stuff.
