Tattered and Grey

I looked for you today, I thought
I saw your face there–
among tethered winter clouds

But when I looked again, they became
another memory cloaked
in tattered grey shrouds

Then came longing, the painful ache
of missing you in harsh–
brilliant sunlight breaking through

And upon my soul ensued, a somber mood
the loneliest shade of indigo blue,
painting all I saw with a wistful hue
as I looked
for you

  1. Oh, this is so heartbreaking. Seeing someone and they are not really there, that is grief at its worst. I’ve been through that before. Beautifully depicted with brilliant use of colors to shade the poem. ❤ ❤

  2. Linda, I understand those waves of longing. They hit when you least expect them and always leave too soon. Poignant and resonant.

Hoping your procedure went OK. See you in 2021, where “the skies are not cloudy all day…”

  3. Lovely piece Linda – I kept looking from the photo to your lines, back and forth – until the last brief lines. Thank you for sharing this piece at a difficult time. All best wishes for the new year.

I’m not sure why I’ve been finding so many favorite lines in people’s endings, but I really, really loved these. They just capped off the poem perfectly, Linda!

  6. You’ve got me looking for faces in Norfolk’s ‘tethered winter clouds’ – and the sky is packed with them this morning. I love the ‘loneliest shade of indigo blue, / painting all I saw with a wistful hue’, a sad colour but more beautiful than winter grey.
