Musings on Life, Love, and Linguine-Poetry & Writing
We are still here
flesh and blood and bone
Yet he is gone
drifting away in melancholy
grey smoke memories
Of more vivid days
Sometimes, we hear
his demanding bark
or the tap, tap ,tap of his paws
whispering
on the cold tile floor
his restless soul
must be wandering
back and forth
over the rainbow bridge
making sure
he’s left the bones behind
for us to unearth
and find his greatest gift-
that of unconditional love.

I kind of guessed your poem would be canine themed, Linda, and I understand the love a dog leaves and how much you miss him, even with your new doggy friend. I love the lines:
‘drifting away in melancholy
grey smoke memories
Of more vivid days’
And
I remember, after our Jasper died 13 years ago, hearing for a long time
‘… the tap, tap ,tap of his paws
whispering
on the cold tile floor’.
A poignant poem.

Thank you kindly Kim. Yes, we do miss him terribly so. But Jackson does help to ease the pain.

I can so understand the void he has left. So good that you have someone else to create another space with you…

I’m sure he comes back regularly to the bridge and looks across to see if you’re on your way. Beautiful elegy to your dear departed pooch.

Fortunately, Sandra’s daughter has Rizzo, now that Polly’s gone. Not that one can replace the other, or that Polly will ever be actually “gone”, but…
Great write, Linda.

Such a beautiful soul will long be remembered. I can hear the tap of his paws as he paces back and forth on the rainbow bridge, maybe not totally ready to leave you yet.

I had a yorkie that crossed that rainbow bridge years ago and it was so hard. Now, we’ve had Romeo a Maltipoo for about a year and it’s been a real blessing. They are special little souls! ❤🐾❤

I appreciate your poem. Pieces of my heart have passed beyond that rainbow bridge. Yet, I can’t be without a dog. (My only requirement before I said, “I do” was to never deny me one.) Thank you! This was beautiful.
