A Timeless Patina

“Death twitches my ear;

‘Live,’ he says…

‘I’m coming.”

― Virgil

Plucking taut strings with a horsehair bow
the air fills with a deep woody melody heard
with nimble fingers upon a slender throat
each ethereal song more beautiful as wood ages
painted in a timeless patina of bronze curves

And yet a human body falters, grows frail
when touched by the same elegant hands
smooth skin wrinkles, the soul ravaged by age
and though life’s aria replays again and again
still breath finally fades as spirit withers away
