The Forest

-Linda Lee Lyberg

When the ebony night falls
Deep in the hidden forest
The trees come alive and dance
To the cricket’s lulling chorus.

Two-stepping on the moss
As the giants swirl and spin
The creatures of the night
Clasp hands and gaily join in

With every daring move
Their secret world comes alive
Turning cartwheels in the air
As they bump, jump, and jive

Until dawn begins to peek through
They dance all through the night
Then return to their proper places
Firmly rooted, they seek the light

While waiting for evening’s dusk
All through the day they grow
So their party can begin again
As their nourishing sap flows
