A Rose for Mother

My mother instilled a deep respect for nature within me. She taught me all I know about gardening and encouraged my curiosity about the world around me. I remember her best in the garden. Her slender hands stained from the earth, her eyes as blue as the sky. Wispy hair pinned off her neck to catch any cool breeze in the humid summer heat. She wore her favorite old jeans grubby at the knees, and a faded cotton shirt. She never cared what she wore, for she would rather spend her last dime on a new flower.

She loved to watch the sunrise sitting on her back porch that faced the woods. She sat in her old rocking chair, drinking her coffee and listening to the birds serenading the dawn. Although she is gone, she was/is my touchstone for what is real in my life.

  1. This haibun is a lovely memorial in itself. I like the idea that every rose links you back to your mother. She sounds like a woman who understood what is important in life.

  2. A fitting haibun for your mother. I love that she loved roses, like my mother and grandmother. She links you to truly what is important in life. A lovely haiku as well.

  3. WONDERFUL, very touching. My mother died young. Your poem reopened my own memories. On a trip to the big island of Hawaii, we stayed on the Hilo side, in a bungalow on a horse ranch. We were o\n a high bluff, facing the ocean. The week we were there , I rose before dawn, and sat on the porch drinking Chinese tea and greeted the sunrise.

  4. My mother was also happiest with her hands in the soil. For them it was true “One is nearer God’s heart in the garden than anywhere else on earth”. Your words touched my heart.

  5. Wow! Linda, I love this so much!! You were so exquisite and elegant in your delightful descriptions of your Mom and her time in her garden! You made us feel like we could have been there with her at sunrise with coffee and listening to the songbird serenade!!! Please be sure to include this in your “Best of Linda” collection!! Bellissimo, My Dear, Bellissimo!!
