Aftermath

Tall grass grew between the railroad timbers. The last time a train passed this way was probably back in 2020 during the Covid-19 outbreak.

Lucas followed train tracks because they always lead somewhere. Long ago, he got into the habit of counting steps. Each night, he wrote down the number of steps that day in his moleskin.

Finally reaching the train station, he could see no one left and no one came on the bare platform. A faded sign read, Welcome to Salt Lake City.

He had seen only one human on his journey, a week back in Denver. ‘Going home to Virginia’, the man said and went on his way. His parting words were, “If you’re going to SLC, look for the grey spires in the sky. That’s the Mormon temple and there’s folks living there.”

Spotting the spires, Lucas walks towards them.

  1. Pretty damn scary, very dark and realistic. Today out here on the trail, there has been some terrific flash fiction; makes prosery one of my favorite prompts.
