Dearest Bella,
I still remember your beautiful face
and I often wonder why you chose to grace
My humble life with a precious gift from above
for you taught me again what it is to love
I know you chose me for a reason,
without doubt all souls have a season
But yours left an indelible mark
upon this battle scarred heart
And I’ll not ever in my lifetime forget
nor will I have any regrets
For you came to me in my moment of need,
even though you made my tender soul bleed
I am grateful you chose me to be the one you would teach
that death is not the end but a setting free

Spring morning haze dissipates
In the wake of swift March winds
Roaring in with rising red sun
Spawning swirling dust devils
Dancing with winter’s brittle leaves
While whirligigs spin in a frenzied blur of coppery blades
and brassy wind chimes clang in blustery shade

Author’s Note: We’ve had some really windy days so far this March. Today is overcast and a few drops of rain have fallen. Hoping for more rain as it’s been dry.

Melodies no longer escape from ivory and ebony keys
drifting out an open window on a summer breeze
what once was alive in the garden now dying and grey,
for when the music stopped life withered away
Now there’s only traces of happier spring days
an intrepid red rose blooming, a trumpet vine untamed
From time to time, haunting random notes are heard
wafting through the grounds with a hesitant stammer
as field mice gnaw away at dampened wool felt
clinging to each decaying wooden hammer

Rain
Drops, drifts
Slow and swift
Falls from on high
Spring mornings gentle shift
From a pastel aqua washed sky
As it whispers to seeds in lilting sighs
Rise up tender greens, pushing through earth’s dark terrain
Be brave, embrace this life throw fears aside
Sweet blooms tempting bees flying by
Amber honey, their gift
Naught can deny
Warm sun kissed
Soft;mist
Rain

And this is where it begins
This defining moment in time
The beginning of the ending
When what you trusted falls away and who you are
Becomes obscured on a moonless night
And who you thought he was is darker still
And you,
Left standing with cold empty arms on the precipice
Of knowing,
Accepting the finality of it, the end of it all
When your heart jumps into the black void of nothingness
And drowns.

I am floating in the highest corner of a sparsely furnished room, looking down at a baby in the middle of a big bed. Covering the bed is a soft chenille bedspread in a maroon and cream color. A woman, my mother is sprawled across the bed playing with the baby, and cooing soft words of love. The baby is smiling at her, as if she understands what my mother is saying. On a spiritual level, I come to realize the baby is me. Somehow, my soul has stepped out of my tiny body and is looking down on the scene below. This is the earliest recollection I have of my childhood.
I didn’t have a happy childhood for the most part, it was one filled with chaos and discord. My mother, bless her soul, was the one constant source of joy and stability, and I never doubted her love. This unusual memory has stayed with me all my life, and is my earliest remembrance I have of us and our bond.

Author’s Note: It’s a chilly morning here in Mesa, AZ. It’s in the 40’s and today’s high will be 63. Love this time of year! On a side note, I haven’t been writing a whole lot of poetry lately; I have a new puppy- Jackson- and he is quite the character. He’s a rescue and needs a lot of love and attention right now to help him feel safe, happy, and know this is now his forever home.
