“The possible’s slow fuse is lit by the Imagination.”
― Emily Dickinson
To look at the world with eyes of a child,
marveling at velvet wings of butterflies
as they float from flower to flower
Slurping sweet nectar
To while away long summer hours
searching for possibilities in wispy clouds
With ne’er a worry or care

When I was five, my step-grandfather tried to put his hands in places they don’t belong
But I fought him off for even I knew his actions were wrong
We were alone in his sleek sedan, the kind with one long seat
I jumped in the back, yelled and screamed
and cried all the way home
And then in my early teens, my step-father tried the same,
When he came home late one hot Texas night
drunker than Cooter Brown from
the hair of the dog that he drank everyday
He put on a record- Marty Robbins singing ‘El Paso’
The sound carried through the thin walls of the trailer, waking me
He came into my room, slipped
his hands under the threadbare sheet
tried to touch me where a father shouldn’t
but in my terrified state, I slapped his hands away
When I was sixteen, a man tried to lure me into his van
in the parking lot of a mall, with promises of fame and fortune
if I only would let him take photos of me,
because I was so beautiful you see
One evening, when I was nineteen
I came upon a disheveled man
masturbating
in the potato chip aisle of a grocery store
I turned and ran, forgetting what I needed
So after all is said and done, I won’t ponder
On the ways of men~ Or the things they do to be seen

Naive thoughts adrift on a sea of longing
in tender innocence of youth written
about love; first, lost, last and forever
and all the conflicting feelings between
for I thought I understood life
and its deeper meaning.
Looking back at those childish rhymes,
poetry was but a seed in my womb
with established roots many years ago
watered with tears from life’s wounds.
Digging deeper and deeper down
it transformed the words of youth
into a vivid flourishing garden,
where the aged poet wanders, and
is born again under the luminous spell
of a gibbous autumn moon.

Plant each seed
Envision and dream
Be thankful
For all life
Brings with each gentle rising
Of bright morning sun

This morning as a bright autumn sun
peeks through meandering smoky clouds
I ramble through my ancient garden,
delighting in the budding roses
finally recovering from desert heat
I search for lime green praying mantis
who are abundant this time of year
I watch them spread their razored arms
in prayer towards turquoise heavens
lost in reverent meditation
I see tender sprouts of gay wildflowers
pushing up through rocky grained sand
as blue belly lizards chase black beetles
crawling on grey stone walls while they
run away from water sprinkling flowerbeds

Alice and Zeke live in the attic of a greying weathered abandoned house. They were out hunting one night when they happened upon it in the middle of the woods. Zeke spotted a broken window near the rooftop and decided to explore. Alice followed close behind and that’s when they found the abandoned nest. It was perfect.
On brumous nights, the stale scent of humans seeps through cracks from floors below. They are safe for there is nothing behind the wall except a space where the wind whistles.
Though they are usually nocturnal hunters, today is a special day. It is mating season and they have chosen one another. Nodding and bowing in a ritualistic dance, Zeke mounts Alice with force. It is over in a matter of seconds, and Alice flies to the nest and lays eggs. There are three. The brooding begins.
