I’ve always loved my birthday in spite of not having celebrated it as a child. It’s the day I came into this world and came to be.
The year I turned 55, I decided to throw myself a themed birthday party- I figured why not? The theme was Mad Men and everyone had to dress like that era. We served martinis and Tom Collins, and of course gin and tonics- any libation from that era. I made Hors d’oeuvres,- cold baby potatoes piped with sour cream and a dollop of black caviar, cold boiled shrimp, crudités, tiny quiche, a ham dip.
We played twister, listened to cocktail music, and had a Ouija board set up. At the end of the night, I sent each guest home with a CD of some of the music of the era. It remains one of my favorite memories.

“When the owl sings, the night is silent.“- Charles de Leusse
Fleeting breeze from feathered wings
Kissing my startled face
Embedding the sight upon my soul,
An indelible mark on fair skin
Astounding how a watchful owl
Came to me, came to be
A welcome companion
In the last days of her life
Bringing a message, an omen
Live, Live, Live- Be free, Believe
See life’s miracles surrounding
And let your heart soar free, unbound

Author’s Note: Back in May, I had a visit from a great horned owl. She stayed with me for six days. I wrote about my encounter with Bella (a name I gave her) during that time. Needless to say, she left a mark on my soul that I will carry forever. You can search my archives for the month of May 2020 if interested. Here is a story I wrote about her: Six Days of Magic

“Geologists have a saying – rocks remember.” -Neil Armstrong
What does this rock dream while it sleeps in the sun?
Does it recall wooly mammoths that once trod this land
can the rock remember its birth and how it came to be
Was it once in a green flowing river that honed with gritty sand,
then etched and shaped it into a heart of weathered grey stone
Is this rock’s only destiny to never beat or understand
what loving someone with all your heart means
yet it can remember the beginning of you and me?

Author’s Note: I enjoy collecting rocks, stones, crystals and minerals. I found this one on a walk last year and first wrote about it here: Heart-Shaped Stone

“Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth.” Herman Hesse
Listen to
the silence of trees
flourishing
whispering
their wisdom if you open
your heart to their voice
Rustling, they
sing an ancient song-
peace and hope
prevails when
man lives in tune with nature
respecting all life

summer morning shine-
wandering breeze lifting
the brim of my hat
summer afternoon-
scorching waves break still air
cicadas singing
summer evening-
stifling heat as day ends
black ravens take wing
summer midnight-
cool wind rustles treetops
an owl hunts for prey

A fleeting flash of stark gray and white
a pompous cocking of feathered tail
as his melody dances on air
The forest is in awe of his vast repertoire
for the mockingbird can sing almost anything
as he remembers each note any bird croons
Flitting from limb to limb, serenading the trees
flying from dense thicket to lush valley green
spreading his bright song of joy everywhere
Now a graceful waltz lingers as he takes wing
and from my ruby lips escapes a heavy sigh
As I whisper to the nascent breeze,
Oh, that I could fly!
