Shattering Time

Berlin Holocaust Monument: Pixabay

The veil between this moment and next

A paper thin gossamer shield

That deconstructs the moment we take

Another shattering breath

For what are moments

But brief memories of time past

Time present and the future

Which holds all the remembrances

Of today close to our breast for tomorrow

kitchen stripping

Appealing tangerine peeling
Revealing its tender flesh to the air
As the aroma of crisp citrus rushes in
The fools stop and stare
At the nakedness of the fruit

Following suit the lacy fern
Sits in the sunny window
Pushing forth and unfurling
Its alien curled fronds
Exposing a tender heart

Watching the striptease
In the kitchen unfold
A pearl white oval egg
With its smooth porcelain skin
Waits patiently to be
Cracked by a human hand

What does it all mean?

flickr.com

If truth be told, my quiet life today
Is not so varied from before
Spending each precious day with my dog
Writing lyrical poems, the occasional sound
Of my own voice reading the words to him
Does he understand my meaning?

I take a stroll in the garden, pausing
To bury my nose in a fragrant rose
And pull the occasional wayward weed
Wishing my mother were here to see
The beauty only passing years can bring
Is she here but on another plane?

Sometimes, haunting music plays
As I reminisce with french melodies
Reliving the times of our Paris days
And the supreme bliss we felt
Which vanishes now in today’s haze
Of cloudy uncertainty

With all this death and unrest,
There is an underlying change
For now I spend most of my days
Questioning and thinking about everything

What have we humans gone and done?
What was the tipping point when it all changed?
Can our future and that of earth be re-arranged?
Will we be here this time next year to see another spring?

I have no answers for each nagging question only brings
Me back to this existence which on the surface hasn’t changed
What does it all mean?

Imaginary Garden with Real Toads: Day 3 Existentialism

Mother Earth

I’ve walked this familiar street before
Where silence reigns and the only companions
My dog and the melodic singing of the mockingbird

My feet tread lightly here, for there is nothing to fear
As I pause to watch a swallowtail floating
On this glorious morning’s zephyr

Overhead, I see a bluebell cloud swept sky
All around, signs of chartreuse spring gleaming
And colorful blossoms sprouting with joy

And still, the Grim Reaper comes calling
For so many humans every single day
So now we pay for our blissful ignorance

Yet the stars still shimmer in a black sky
The moon rises and sways the tides
While Mother Earth orbits the sun

In the natural world, life goes on as if
Nothing of importance is happening
Can you taste and see the the color of irony?

For we, the ‘intelligent beings’ have been doing the same
As our planet and her magnificent creatures
Suffered from our own greedy hands stained in apathy.

Scarlet Flax

April dawns with scattered clouds
Obscuring the daybreak sun
March’s roaring lion lingers on
In brisk breezy morning air

I find myself pondering
What this new spring will bring
For I am a fool who believes
In the beauty of small things

And today among the profusion
Of bold purple and yellow blooms
I spy shocking red petalled blossoms
With centers of stark ebony stars

The delicate scarlet flax is lovely
Oh, what a brave little wild flower
To have the courage to grow
Among bigger, brighter colored flowers

And yes, you may think me foolish
To write of a simple red bloom
But poets are sentimental fools
Finding grace in the smallest of things

The Butterfly, The Bee and The Tree

“We have forgotten how to be good guests, how to walk lightly on the earth as its other creatures do.”
—Barbara Ward

The Painted Lady does not dream of fleeting fame
when flitting from flower to flower,
instead she savors every delicious sip
as she lingers amongst colorful blossoming bowers.

The honeybee does not seek righteous glory
for his life’s work gathering golden pollen
as he disperses the tiny grains to our crops
and creates amber rivers of flowing honey.

The majestic trees did not ask to be
the fallen heroes of this mistreated planet
yet indeed they deserve this prestigious honor
for they purify the very air we breathe
and grace us with their magnificence.

#Haibun: Fishing

Mom and I with her Fish

I will never forget that day for it is one of my fondest memories with my mom. I had driven up to the ranch the night before with the intent of going fishing with her. We awoke before dawn, and drove down to the fishing pond.

Each of us found our spots to fish not far from one another and settled in on overturned plastic buckets. I remember how quiet it was; only the occasional sound of our lines hitting the water as we cast them into the misty air. As they landed, they created undulating ripples in the dark cold water.

Lost in reverie, I didn’t see the fish strike right when the sun broke through the trees.
Mom jumps to her feet and yells, “Grab the net Linda, I’ve got a big ‘un!”
