This poem is a thunderstorm raging across the scrubby desert
lightning striking mammoth saguaros, leaving behind
a spectral skeleton to rot in the coming hot summer sun
This poem is the sound of cold plops of rain hitting dry earth.
This poem is a flooding wash, where muddy waters race
forming their own paths leaving behind in their wake,
exposed crystals, minerals, tumbleweeds and gold
This poem is a flooding river in the once arid desert.
This poem is a kaleidoscope of southwestern wildflowers,
where once barren land save for chollas, and cacti is now a
beautiful landscape of opposites, lush blooms and deadly thorns
This poem is the hopeful voice of spring in Arizona.
This poem is a thunderstorm, a desert wash, and wildflowers.

Gentle breeze and sweet sunshine in a spring garden
where vivid green tendrils vine and climb
murmuring to wild roses blossoming spirits
Come, feel the quiet solitude of verdant trees
for harmony is here in ancient forest boughs
while wandering the yielding mossy path beneath
and listening to the poetry of bird song above
wrapped in the silence of nature’s peace

I am but a tiny seed
Carried by unsettled wind
Until I find a resting place
In wayward stones and sand.
Desert sand is my companion
With a grainy texture so fine
Making it a perfect home
For an African Daisy to grow.
Every year with patience I wait
Yearning for the cold winter rains
To nurture my seed so it sprouts
For that’s when my glorious colors begin.
In vivid shades of orange and yellow
With an intricate pollen and black eye
I smile from my velvet heart center
At the warming sun in a a turquoise sky.
When this arid land starts to parch and sear,
My short life is ending as I droop and fade
So I drop my delicate children seeds
Who then await the chilly winter rains.
And come next spring’s season,
They carpet stones and sand
As if almighty God himself
Had painted this sacred land.

Author’s Note: I have become enamored with African Daisies, which are profuse in my neighborhood. I have a few started for this year but the pics are from a neighbor’s yard. They will grow anywhere it seems so they are tough, yet so bright and cheerful!
Come join us today where I am hosting dVerse Poetics The topic is “To Be a Flower”. The prompt goes live at 3:00 PM EST. Hope to see you there!

There are moments caught between heart-beats when the world tilts on its axis and time stops. For the woman it is when she first hears his deep voice from behind while standing in line to see a movie.
“Everything I learned, I learned from the movies.”
She turns around, and looks into the most startling brown eyes she has ever seen. They are deep amber, with flecks of gold shot through like an autumn sunset.
He smiles and asks, “Do you know who said that?”
“Of course, Audrey Hepburn, my favorite. She stars in the movie we are about to see. And it is also based on a book by one of my favorite authors- Truman Capote.”
He laughs, offers his hand and says, “Hi, my name is Truman. What’s yours?”
And in that instant, the world tilted and Holly fell in love.
