Gazing into the washed rose pink sky
mottled with wispy clouds drifting by
there on the wavering horizon
a majestic steeple arising
above purple fog crawling
an omen beckoning and calling
Come, rest within hallowed peaceful halls
your prayers answered within these sacred walls.

At first it was to ease the pain, to pen the words that soothed
to write what I was afraid to say to spill my angst onto the page.
And then it became a hungry need, a powerful elixir to feed
my soul, to offer others hope beyond the worldly greed
As I searched for proper words a blessed miracle occurred,
I began to breathe the tiny details of this amazing planet earth
a fragile skimmer dragonfly, the lilting songs of the mockingbird
as I while away the hours watching a new butterfly emerge
I’ve had an epiphany, my third eye open, a spectacular rebirth
Now it is all this that sets my gypsy heart soaring free,
giving of words to humanity, for at last I am being
the truest person I was always meant to be
for if not today, not now… then when?

Cathedral morning arises with solitude its only companion
As a lone white crowned sparrow sings in blushed rose dawn
Waiting and listening for the yellow canary
Whose wistful voice breaks, imprisoned in a gilded cage
The sparrow free, dreams of the divine balance
And the gifts offered to the caged bird
A carefree life, a safe place to rest,
Never fearing the fierce hawk’s talons
But the canary trapped, yearns for liberty,
To soar in a turquoise cloud swept sky,
Cool wind ruffling feathers, flying free
Embracing the thrill of a new morning,
Wondering if indeed it will be — its last.

And I beg of you, what is the shape of the journey
When death comes calling, pleading, greeting us
in the thin place between what’s real and what isn’t.
Is death round as a wispy dandelion, blowing
away in a gentle breeze, happy and carefree?
Or is it square, where everywhere you venture,
you find yourself in a corner
With no way back to here ~ where you once were?
Is it an eternal spiral and you are
forever spinning, re-living gossamer memories
of breathing, feeling, and being alive?
In the end, is it nothing
but an empty lonely table set for a party of one?

Imaginary Garden with Real Toads: Play it Again! with Real Toads
Author’s Note: This is Kerry’s last post at the Garden which will be closing, but remain as an archive and a place of inspiration. I chose to use Magaly’s prompt- 1 Poem, 3 titles. The three books I chose are: The Shape of the Journey by Jim Harrison, The Thin Place by Kathryn Davis, and Party of One by Anneli Rufus.
