Moon Kiss
-Linda Lee Lyberg
When the moon kisses the sea
The waters are peacefully still
And night becomes so bright.
The stars all make their plea
We must shine on at our will
When the moon kisses the sea.
The whales all sing with glee
As mother moon’s sonnet fills
And night becomes so bright.
The night birds fly and soar free
To dance to the sonnet’s trill
When the moon kisses the sea.
The ship takes shelter in the lee
And slows to behold the thrill
And night becomes so bright.
Then all the colorful fishes flee
And chase the swimming krill
When the moon kisses the sea
And night becomes so bright.

It’s so beautiful. A beautiful image. The water does stand still when moon kisses sea!

I hadn’t thought of the moon kissing the sea before, but now that you mention it I won’t forget it. I like how you added three rhyme words into this version of the villanelle rather than two. I think that was an interesting modification. I may try it myself in a future villanelle now that I see that as a possibility.

This was my first one to do, I truly enjoyed it but was it ever challenging! I read a lot of others, as well and was a bit confused as to whether the last word in each second line should rhyme with one another. 🙂

The last word in all the stanzas should rhyme on one sound according to the pattern, but part of the challenge of the prompt was to open the villanelle form up for modifications, if one wanted to make them, and the one you came up with, perhaps without realizing it was a modification, sounded interesting.

The moon kissing the sea… a wonderful thought…. in Swedish there is a word called mångata which means the moon street… that path across the sea to that point where moon as sea meets.
