Minstrels

“I’ve spent a lifetime
trying to learn the language of the dead”

~ Jim Harrison from Sister in  Songs of Unreason

In the quiet early hours before morning blooms

I yearn to catch their voices amid the scattered ruins

and revel in the midst of their exquisite power.

Every step beyond the veil brings me ever closer

my earthly soul craves tactile memories

but when I reach, I fail for there is empty air.

In my mind a melody plays, a mystery in song

I try to be in the essence of every note and tone

but melding falls away with approaching dawn.

I pray to understand every restless night

these ethereal beings who haunt my dreams,

roaming minstrels singing of their afterlife.
