“Love is raw as freshly cut meat, mean as a beetle on the track of dung.”Jim Harrison

The innocent child in me believes
in love with a pure intent
the kind of love
while dancing
in a fairytale trance
and wearing glass slippers.

The wise woman I am
knows this to be true;
love makes you sick
makes you sing the blues
breeds insane ideas
when you’re in its midst.

Love cuts a scarred heart
with sharpest of thorns
to breed new fears
in an ocean of tears
that rip your world apart.

Love tears the raw meat
from your fragile bones
leaves you naked and spent
no place to call home
‘Never again, you say’
but then…

A new prince rides in on a white horse
crooning his charming love songs
and in those glorious hours
when the woman is under
his smooth masculine power
The hopeful child comes along
and gingerly tries on
her glass slippers once again.

  1. Aw, is it always that bad?!? I would think the most painful part is the glass slipper thing. This is a really good take off of Harrison’s prompt! Well done… er, raw!

  2. Oh, My Dear! You’ve done it again! Such a super post! I just love your last stanza! The “Forever Fantasy” returns! A really great depiction of love’s journey through the “Circle”!!
    Bellissimo, Linda, Bellissimo!!! Yet again!!!
