“My little dog – a heartbeat at my feet.”- Edith Wharton
A slender long legged woman with a honeyed tan
buries painted toes into hot grey sand
raises her face to the turquoise sky watching
seagulls as they take bread from her hand.
She spends her days walking
up and down the foamy water’s edge
collecting seashells and colored glass
smoothed by the ocean and sedge.
Her merry life is a simple one
for she has nothing to fear
spending long days with her dog,
And at night when the day’s done
she sits by the warm fire and reads
with her faithful companion she loves
always close at her feet.
As the clock strikes midnight,
they make their way to the bed
grateful for the downy pillows
on which to lay their heads.
Lulled to sleep by lapping waves
rushing to the moonlit shore
the salty air thick and heavy as it
creeps into the screened porch.
They drift away and dream
he’s chasing hares and she’s
laughing at his futile attempts
as her loving heart beams.
She knows the time will come
when he will have to leave
and when the reaper comes,

A beautiful love story, between a woman and her canine companion. Find myself, substituting the dog, for one of the three cats (Star, Venus, and Squeak) that I share my life with.

Yes she will. You have painted a picture of perfect contentment. My wolf-dog companion died seven and a half years ago and I still grieve. I will forever grieve. He was my soulmate this lifetime. A beautiful poem, that brings tears.

Thank you. I’ve lost a couple in my life. Dreading the day with my current little guy. He’s almost 13. I’m sorry for your loss, but their love is so special isn’t it?

Oh this is a heart breaker really. I have 3 dogs, and I know the time always eventually comes. One doesn’t think much about this when they are playful pups, but my oldest is now 13…..sigh. I like the way you shared the relationship between human and dog. Best friends!

A doggie is also a woman’s best friend!

Oh, My Dear! You put tears in my eyes!!! Made me think of our little sweetheart, Winnie (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel)!! I don’t think I could stand to look in her eyes at the end! I hope we are both lucky enough to drift away in our sleep! Bellissimo, Linda, Bellissimo!!

You brought tears to my eyes, Linda, this poem reminded me so much of beach walks with my little Jasper, who died over seven years ago.I remember
‘…walking
up and down the foamy water’s edge
collecting seashells and colored glass
smoothed by the ocean and sedge’.
You’ve painted such a comforting, cosy picture in the lines:
‘…at night when the day’s done
she sits by the warm fire and reads
with her faithful companion she loves
always close at her feet’.
It was the final stanza that made me cry.

Thank you Kim. Our pets mean so much to us. They enrich our lives with unconditional love and the only time they hurt us is when they pass. Our little guy is now 13 and it’s been on my mind.
