What Ifs

While the sun shines much too harsh today
As I wallow alone in this secluded room
The dying rose holds luscious perfume at bay
For there’s to be no joy in this present gloom

As I wallow alone in this secluded room
I ponder ‘what ifs’ had I not ran, but stayed
For there’s to be no joy in this present gloom
Did your fate have its way in my life charade?

I ponder ‘what ifs’ had I not ran, but stayed
How different would my scarred life now be?
Did your fate have its way in my life charade
Or by the hand of God, was my soul set free?

How different would my scarred life now be
if the dying rose held luscious perfume at bay
By the hand of God my soul was set free
and still the sun shines much too harsh today

  1. Love the form, smiles. Life has too many what-ifs and one can always wonder if another decision has been made. Really like this line:

I ponder ‘what ifs’ had I not ran, but stayed

    Happy new year!!!

  2. This was a really excellent pantoum Linda. Great depth to ponder. Deft crafting of the lines, well considered. As the great mandala turns, we make the decisions we make, and we take the actions we take – and they were all perfect in making us who we are today. To look beyond that reality is to ponder faulty memory, or unstable conjecture. Nothing served in that. We need yo make our decisions and take our actions as effectively as possible in the here and now, in the moment. Do not allow oneself to be frozen by memory or conjecture. IMHO. HNY 2019

  3. stellar poem in physicality of it in that there are sharp points and a sense of claustrophobia, trapped by one’s thoughts of why and what might have been, as well as the repeating lines. Lynda very beautifully composed ❤

  4. We reach contentment when we forgive ourselves for past poor choices and realize we did the best we knew how at the time. Nothing to be gained by what ifs.

  5. to sit and ponder is like a wheel turning and your rhyming repeated verse increases the intensity of your musings, well done Linda!!
