That Last Fateful Day

What was it you said that last fateful day?
I remember my tears,
I know the pain

(it lives inside me)

I saw the deed done, but I can’t quite

(etched on my heart)

remember the words

(were there words?)

as I try to fill the empty
spaces you left in your haste to run.

  1. “In your haste to run” is the line that got me. I am picturing a person or animal that can’t run because their body will no longer let them, and so that is the reason for the haste to be whole and vital again. But they take our hearts with them when they go, don’t they?
