The Words

“That’s what careless words do. They make people love you a little less.”
― Arundhati Roy, The God of Small Things

The poisoned words slithered in and out
of loose threaded seams, re-opening
old wounds with venomous fangs.

Soon, she realized all she needed to do
was double-stitch them up tight
so the words would never get through.

But words have an uncanny way
of crawling into you, infesting you
the words, the words, the words.

  2. Oooh! What a unique interpretation, and a theme to provoke analysis. Words do have power and whether to keep them in or let them out is the better option is debatable.

  3. Words can take root, grow, ever expanding, to dwell in the heart — either to nurture or to destroy. This is a strong write Linda.

  5. Well – thinking about that it goes on to say “words will never hurt me”. I think I mean this certainly gives a false meaning to that little ditty. Words can hurt a lot longer than a punch, I suppose. Can eat you from the inside out!
