Musings on Life, Love, and Linguine-Poetry & Writing
In the early days we heard the static
Like an annoying fly buzzing round our heads
News of a deadly virus running rampant
On a continent halfway around the world
Nonchalant we thought it’s not here, not among us but
One day we awoke and the world had grown smaller, changed
Though birds still flew in the crystal blue sky
Nothing would ever be or feel the same again
With this smallness, our hidden flaws became clear
Showing our beautiful best and our bitter worst
The whole world now crying rivers of blinding tears
As we come to understand what we have done
Seeing our failings in the stark light of day
And now in grief we stumble like zombies alone
No physical contact with another human
Seldom wandering far from our home

These words, “As we come to understand what we have done
Seeing” seem so instructive to consider during our lockdown.

Though the current lockdown is overwhelming and pandemic frightening, I can’t help but agree that it’s somehow urging us to re-evaluate everything, be it our priorities, our weakness, our mistakes, our strengths and above all our take on humanity. Thank you so much for writing to the prompt, Linda! 💝💝

In times of crisis, we see “our beautiful best and our bitter worst”. So true. Let’s hope the beautiful best wins out!

We have some lessons to learn – also, with everyone travelling everywhere, we are now a global village, which is how it spread so fast. Scary times. Stay safe.

It never surprised me… when we learned about it on December 31… it had already settled in many places around the world.

I enjoyed your poem very much. I especially like the lines “With this smallness, our hidden flaws became clear
Showing our beautiful best and our bitter worst” I like to think that it’s mostly our “beautiful best” that we share. 🙂

Nothing like a pandemic to place us in retrospection. I am not sure about the world, but I know I will walk out we a much different view on life.

You had me at /the whole world crying rivers of blinding tears/. You accurately captured our arrogance and ignorance, and concluded with a jolt of insight and hope.

Your opening lines convey the way it all started so well, Linda, the buzz of news and the shrinking of the world. Outside, Mother Nature continues on her course, birds fly and sing, flowers bloom. But inside our homes and minds, something has changed – for most of us – ‘Showing our beautiful best and our bitter worst’.

The world has gone smaller and changed in so many days. I can’t wait to go out freely with wondrous excitement for the spring season.

Things changed very quickly. The world did get smaller as we isolated ourselves more.
