The Joy of dogs

Jax

“Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one, is a life diminished.”

― Dean Koontz, A Big Little Life: A Memoir of a Joyful Dog

At any given moment
you must keep me in sight,
lest you think I may slip away
like a dream of chasing hares
on a summer’s day

But little Jax know
I will always be here,
to calm your fears
and keep you safe

Like a butterfly you flit
from room to room
then you race
to the wildflower garden
with nose to the ground
trying to pick up my scent
to find out where I went

And when at last
you track me down
your treasure found,
like a long ago buried bone
Oh what pure joy abounds!

Delight fills your sleek body
when you wag your curled tail
You put on such a show
panting and dancing
those dark eyes smiling
as you share with me
your complete happiness
