Musings on Life, Love, and Linguine-Poetry & Writing
“The salvation of man is through love and in love”
― Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
There was a moment in my life
when quiet hallowed chambers
of an old church became my sanctuary.
Dusky sunlight fell across a scarred plank floor
through blood-stained windows where-
The body of Christ nailed to the rugged cross stared
at dervish phantoms of dust drifting in dank air
as they danced with paraffin smoke of Paschal candles.
This became my naive soul’s salvation for awhile
Among strangers and friends, a respite from pain-
where tattered hymnals grasped by aging hands
held words to Amazing Grace, sung with lament
As a parade of broken souls walked down the aisle
to become whole and saved once again.

Your beautifully penned poem took me way, way back to childhood and the church I grew up in ~~~ grew away from in time.

Everyone needs a sanctuary–be it a place, a person, or something else–and they have a way of appearing at just the right time. So nice to see you at the List!

God, I loved his music! Quiet churches used to be welcoming places of sanctuary, any time of day. “A respite from pain.” A place to sit quiet out of the madhouse for a spell. I think its sad how now they are all locked up except before services.

Salvation is something we all need, and it’s wonderful when it can be found so softly and gently as here.

During my high school years, I found the same sanctuary in church, so this poem resonated for me. Lovely, Linda.

A parade of broken souls, yearning to be whole. I wonder how long that feeling is sustained at least there is peace for a while.

Your words carried me back to my younger days when churches were special, not like the locked-up soulless buildings many have become today.
