To be the River

Subtle
nature’s movement
when deep dark rivers glide
through rolling hills and lush valleys
tranquil
smooth stones buried in shifting sand
Oh! to be the river
to understand
life’s flow.

Colleen’s Weekly Poetry Challenge: #137 Kind & Shift

Author’s Note: With Colleen’s Challenge, we are to use synonyms for Kind & Shift- I used nature for kind and movement for shift.

When the Evening is Still

“Night comes to the desert all at once, as if someone turned off the light.” –Joyce Carol Oates

Another oppressive day watching the world go by as I sit inside
even when the sizzling sun sets red, low in the western sky
still there will be no relief, for this is the southwest desert in July.

Late at night when the evening is still and the harsh wind has eased
I take a walk through my garden, say a wishful prayer of peace
hoping the roses survive another ruthless summer of intense heat.

Yet this I know to be true, this long hot summer will soon pass
then when evening comes and the turquoise sky becomes stained glass
we’ll lounge on a blanket of emerald grass, enjoy a sumptious repast.

#Troiku: Flowers

depth of a flower
hidden pleasures for honeybees
buried in petals

flying away with the bee
a trail of bright yellow flecks
floats on summer wind

some mystery
in the hive, sweet miracle
rich amber honey

When Night Sky and Fiery Comets Collide

“I like on the table, when we’re speaking,

the light of a bottle of intelligent wine.”- Pablo Neruda

I like for you to be still ~
when pale moonlight undulates
across your tranquil face,
while my lips trace the hot pulsing vein
dancing in glistening flesh
as I kiss your sun ripened skin

I like for you to be still ~
when delicate fingers strum, playing
the haunting strings of lovers entwined
clinging as the morning glory vine
to their fleeting beauty that shimmers
with morning dew then fades in gilded sunshine

I like for you to be still ~
when cobalt night sky and fiery comets collide
as our bodies explode into a swirling nebula
breathing colors into love and birthing dazzling stars
until we fall into blissful sleep as one and dream

Sanaa has given us a challenge to use the title from Pablo Neruda’s poem I Like for You to be Still as a frame of reference. Imaginary Garden with Real Toads: Like Starry blooms on a new firmament in July

#Haibun: Beach Party

During my early teenage years, I was a surfer girl. On the weekends, my friends and I would pile into an old beat up station wagon and drive down to Galveston, Texas. Ginger’s older brother was our driver and guardian. Those were fun and care-free times with little adult supervision. My favorite recollection of those days was my two piece baby doll swimsuit. It was a brilliant white eyelet lace that stood out against my dark tanned skin. We would surf all day, eat junk food, and at night, fight for space in the car to sleep. On Sunday when the sun was beginning to set, we would pack up and leave, sleeping the whole way home.
