Lo, I gave my life for you sweet maiden fair asking naught from thy coral peach lips
But only to brush my fingers through soft golden hair and gaze in blue eyes while my heart trips
All I ask when once I am laid in a grey marbled grave please visit this holy place
And on the cold stone lay, a blood red rose with a loving note so again I am graced with your beautiful face

Author’s Note: Chèvrefeuille has given us a classical kigo to work with, along with a brief explanation. Setsubun: The last day of winter. Features ritualistic chasing of devils out of the house, allowing good luck for the spring (the traditional New Year). Compares to the English ritual of opening front and back doors.
Setsubun is an annual Japanese festival on February 3rd. Setsubun is the beginning of Spring according to the old Japanese lunar calendar. It’s traditionally believed that the spirit world comes closer to our world at this time of year. Strips of paper with people’s wishes inscribed on them are placed over the lanterns. It’s thought that wishes may be granted on Setsubun, but they also think that, through the idea of having the spirit world closer by at this event, demons can escape to our world.

This is the place I long to be strolling secret streets of Paris,
hand in hand were we, with every precious moment cherished
We walked worn brick paths each day regardless of the weather
come rain showers, come sunshine, we explored together
For it is there I remember the sparkle in your lion eyes,
shining brighter than the city’s golden ethereal light
when once the evening fell, we nestled in our downy bed,
your tenderness held me captive with the starlit night
and in that simple tiny room, I wept fresh tears of joy

Author’s Note: These precious trinkets hang in my bedroom’s hallway.

I herald in the New Year with a sinus infection. My head is as cloudy as the grey January sky, weighted and heavy as lead. There’s a threat of below freezing weather tonight here in the desert so we throw burlap over the tenderest plants in the garden. In a rush, we pick ripe lemons off our sole citrus tree. Their strong tangy scent reminds me of hot days that will be here all too soon. I’ll preserve some of them in salt for cooking, and juice the rest for summer lemonade.
