We are all virtual prisoners of time
guarded by ticking hands of the clock
trapped in flashbacks gnawing at our minds
that feed our fears as we take useless stock
A vapid predator in the night they stalk
when we are most vulnerable and weak
under cloak of darkness with stealth they walk
in the mid-watch hours when all seems bleak
Into our quagmire of self-doubt they creep
prodding at the tenderest pink scars
in a whining voice they ardently speak
preying on our imaginary horrors
But then through the portal comes hope; a golden dawn
for all worries vanish in the healing light of dazzling sun.

Author’s Note: I worked on a revision to this sonnet, so the last couplet is a resolution. Many Thanks for the feedback!

The sea bit my ankles as I wandered the rocky shore
searching the waves for answers listening but hearing none
So I decided to take a stroll to the dark side of the moon to see if what I sought may be waiting there
But alas no one one was home, for it was dark, desolate and bare
And I traveled among the stars dancing on the Milky Way, hoping to heal my scars, and brighten my dreary days
But then I found myself back where I began, searching for the answer for peace as I walked the windswept rocky shore
and, there at last I found what I was looking for
So the moral of this tale my friends if there is one, is when all is said and done, you end up back where you’ve begun.

Once we’ve spent endless nights fighting our demons
They intrude on our days, and manifest in our feelings.

Carpe Diem #1576: http://chevrefeuillescarpediem.blogspot.com/2019/01/carpe-diem-1576-dawn.html

While the sun shines much too harsh today
As I wallow alone in this secluded room
The dying rose holds luscious perfume at bay
For there’s to be no joy in this present gloom
As I wallow alone in this secluded room
I ponder ‘what ifs’ had I not ran, but stayed
For there’s to be no joy in this present gloom
Did your fate have its way in my life charade?
I ponder ‘what ifs’ had I not ran, but stayed
How different would my scarred life now be?
Did your fate have its way in my life charade
Or by the hand of God, was my soul set free?
How different would my scarred life now be
if the dying rose held luscious perfume at bay
By the hand of God my soul was set free
and still the sun shines much too harsh today
