Once Forsaken

I am the bud and the blossom, I am the late-falling leaf.- Paul Dunbar The Paradox Poem

Is not the velvet rose always seen
As soft as a summer night’s breeze,
Yet once dried their piercing thorns
With emerald leaves tattered and torn
Become knives that cut all too soon.

Blood spilled from the opened wound
Is as red as crushed perfume petals
Falling as they budded and bloomed
While they flourished among summer nettles.

And if I, my darling, am the perfect red rose
Lying upon your silken bed in such sweet repose
Are you a honed knife that cuts straight to the bone
Will you leave me to bleed in your bed, alone
But should you do so, my love you must know.

Once forsaken, I will not accept my heart’s bitter blight
I will be the cold moon that chills and the hot sun that blinds,
I will be the ink black night that offers no shelter to hide
While your tortured soul endures your desperate plight.

If You Go

https://useum.org/artist/Egon-Schiele

If you go I’ll be wondering
What might have been had you stayed,
This lonely heart, thrown asunder
From emptiness created

My lips, missing your tender kisses
My skin, yearning for your caress
My eyes, blinded by glorious moments
Gazing upon your handsome face

Call Me Daisy

I am but a tiny seed
Carried by unsettled wind
Until I find a resting place
In wayward stones and sand.

Desert sand is my companion
With a grainy texture so fine
Making it a perfect home
For an African Daisy to grow.

Every year with patience I wait
Yearning for the cold winter rains
To nurture my seed so it sprouts
For that’s when my glorious colors begin.

In vivid shades of orange and yellow
With an intricate pollen and black eye
I smile from my velvet heart center
At the warming sun in a a turquoise sky.

When this arid land starts to parch and sear,
My short life is ending as I droop and fade
So I drop my delicate children seeds
Who then await the chilly winter rains.

And come next spring’s season,
They carpet stones and sand
As if almighty God himself
Had painted this sacred land.

Indigo Herd

“Indigo Sky Mares”  by Laurel Burch
click HERE for her website.

I dreamed of blue horses coursing through my scarlet veins,
Lighting a burning fire within, stoking glowing ember flames
They raced across a vast field of fertile thoughts and dreams
Blue horses with no names, for nothing was as it seemed.

When they paused to rest in a meadow of golden swaying hay
I heard them neighing to me, Go- you must find your own way
In my dream I replied with my lips uttering these few words
But I long to be wild and free, be part of your celestial herd.

Your time is not yet over, for your life is still bound to earth
Lofty dreams have only begun, your writings now giving birth
As you ponder these, look for clues hidden in your written words
When at last you understand, come soar with our indigo herd.

When Rain and Darkness Comes

Image by Šárka Jonášová from Pixabay

Deep beneath rotting loam,
spores await the right moment
when rain and darkness
comes to encourage growth
blending to create spawn

Tiny white threadlike bodies form
mycelium in the first stage
before the fungi emerge

They push their way through
the fertile medium,
only to burst forth
ready for plucking
by long pale fingers stained
from blackened decaying earth
