Shades of Blue, No. 2

Slipping from my weary soul
this grey cloak of disease
Lost within, body riddled with pain
I struggle to regain my sense of worth, of purpose

After fighting for my life, spirit now reborn
For I am whole again, blanketed in shades of blue

Pale Moon Sighed

“Migration”  Painting by Eddie Schrieffer

Pale moon sighed when Monarchs came
fluttering in on a weightless breeze
with delicate wings tattered and torn
from their arduous journey.

And though their lifespan short
these winged ones came to offer hope
A continuum of life and certain death
washed in shades of autumn’s blush
of crimson, gamboge, and russet.

As their wings unfurled, scattered memories
entrenched in their fragile gossamer
Ancient paths of migration emerged
carrying on their sacred lineage.

#Haiku: Morning Glory Blues

Happiness is NOW! It isn’t tomorrow. It isn’t yesterday. Happiness is like a morning glory: Yesterday’s won’t bloom again; tomorrow’s hasn’t opened yet. Only today’s flower can be enjoyed today. Be happy this very moment, and you’ll learn how to be happy always.- Goswami Kriyananda

The One Stark Truth

Lovebird remains, Mesa, AZ

“No matter how many plans you make or how much in control you are, life is always winging it.”

― Carroll Bryant

The days are finally cooler so I find myself spending more time in the garden. There is a lot to do in fall here in my desert oasis. It’s a time to prune the roses, trim bushes and cleaning up from the monsoons. With sadness, I remove what’s left of once vibrant plants that did not survive the baking heat of summer.

This morning as I am trimming the rampant herbs, I come across the remains of a love bird. I’m not sure how he died, it could have been in a myriad of ways. A stray cat that frequents the garden may have gotten lucky, only to realize this is not your typical tasty bird. A rodent may have found its way in and took its life. Or, as we humans do every day, it may have died from old age.

If ever there is one stark truth evident in the garden, it is this- the endless cycle of life and death. Come spring when I plant flowers and vegetables, life is blooming all around me. In summer, there is the slow deterioration and plants die in the burning sun. After over twenty years of gardening in the desert, I know there is no amount of water that will ease its intensity.

October is a month of contemplation and introspection for me. I turned another year older on the first and I know, like the lovebird, my time grows shorter with each passing day. I cherish every breath of life and each coming of another season, grateful I am still here.

life and death, a garden’s truth

Author’s Note: Posting this from last October. A bit tired today as I did some cleaning, and it’s going to take some time to heal and regain my strength from the radiation treatments. I long to spend more time on the garden but we are still experiencing over a 100 degree days. No pruning the roses until it drops below.

Forever

Forever has only just begun
with each precious day that passes on
Diamond stars still sparkle in blue night sky,
Golden sun still shines happy and gay
Pearl moon still croons to hidden lovers
and as each magical season passes by,
another comes to take its place

Author’s Note: Sharing one from last October. Today is my 66th birthday and I am going to enjoy it to the fullest! I have so much to be grateful for. On Monday, I completed my last radiation treatment for breast cancer- YAY!

Poetry as the Mockingbird Sings

Wikimedia Commons

“My heart is like a Mockingbird, it sings of your enthralling soul every now and then. And, even when I yearn to evade the lyric. I can’t. Because, as it turns out, it’s a sin to kill a Mockingbird.”
― Mohit Kaushik |Yenugwar|

Poetry as the mockingbird sings
though fraught with a bent and broken wing
a voice of faith and belief all will be well
once the torment has swelled and eased
praying gentle rain will soothe with relief
for though this fragile body is failing
and now forever earthbound
someday this soul will soar ever higher
into the arms of the billowy clouds
then I– the poet will be the poetry
as the delicate wind carries me
so listen for my song’s whisper
floating on the evening breeze.
