I sat on the garden bench
eavesdropping on lovebird’s chatter
Marveling at their cacophony of song
dancing on the air
I pondered what their sounds meant
and then at once, understood their lament
for underneath the mesquite tree
lay a tiny lifeless feathered spirit

From where I sit the world’s crazy
no where to turn, future hazy
So I’ll rest high in my tree
because here at least I’m free
I’ll watch golden grasslands sway
delight in gazelles at play
From where I sit the world’s crazy
No where to turn, future hazy

She gathers feathers and broken blue eggs,
discarded treasures from the birds
A shadow box of wispy memories
are proof that life endures.

Author’s Note: Reposting this from last September. It’s been a long week of radiation treatments. I am grateful to have the next three days free of any doctor visits. Stay safe everyone.

Morning moon waning after night
pearly beams of light
vanishing in brilliant sun rays
as dark becomes day
in the evenings a wayward breeze
shadows dance with leaves
as birds take roost in swaying trees
yearning arises once again
a cool caress upon my skin
pearly beams of light, as dark becomes day, shadows dance with leaves

Author’s Note: The form I used today is the Oviellejo, an Old Spanish verse form (derived from ovillo, a ball of yarn). A stanza consists of 10 lines, with a rhyme scheme of AABBCCCDDC. The second line of each rhyme scheme, Line 2,4,6, is a short line of up to 5 syllables. The last line is a “redondilla,” a “little round” that collects all three of the short lines.

“One day you will kiss a man you can’t breathe without, and find that breath is of little consequence.”
― Karen Marie Moning, Bloodfever
In the darkness I have my dreams
of a time when body and soul
came together to make a whole
These days nothing is as it seems
emotions run rife with extremes
But I recall glorious days
when in each other’s arms we’d laze
Lost in your kiss as the earth tipped
drowning in sweet wine of your lips
and today’s pain fades in the haze

These are days of endless summer
as we bow in defeat to heat
wilting petals fall at our feet
sun pounding down, a mad drummer
while we long for winter’s slumber
Morning dawns in tranquility
light breaks through with fragility
awash in a rose colored sky
so we lift our weary heads high
banishing our humility
