Morning air golden with pollen dust floating
The Mesquite blooming, showering
A rain of tiny yellow blossoms caught in my hair
As I wander through the peaceful garden
Seeking solace in these darkest times
A healing medicine to ease pain
A panacea for these tortured souls
A balm to seal this crack in the world
As emptiness reigns with helplessness
For humanity has said farewell
To kindness, hope and peace
Come be still, let us kneel and pray
Only together can we return to love

Author’s Note: My heart is heavy this morning with the unrest, with injustice, with death, with it all.

“How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a weary world.”
― William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice
Blow wind blow
Mighty gusts fanning
Flames of Hope
And Kindness
Spreading through this diseased land
Resurgence of LOVE

“Perhaps he does not want to be friends with you until he knows what you are like. With owls, it is never easy-come-easy-go.”
― T.H. White, The Sword in the Stone
She flew-
One early morn
Mystifying Bella
Resting in shade after hunting
All night
She gazed-
Into my soul
No more a mystery
To this miraculous creature
Golden
Owl eyes-
Wise and knowing
Trusting my gentle heart
With her life, slow ebbing away
Fading
Feathered-
Wings of power
Swift wind brushing my face
What beauty and grace to witness
Why me?
And now-
That she is gone
My world less magical
A feather drifting from the sky
Her gift
She flew-
Into my soul
Trusting my gentle heart
What beauty and grace to witness
Her gift

Author’s Note: For six amazing days, I had a Great Horned Owl visiting me, filling my world with magic. Although I don’t know if it was male or female, I chose to call her Bella, which means ‘Beautiful” in Italian. And she was. Sadly, Bella died here in my yard. I like to think she sought me out to spend her last days in a safe and peaceful place. For those of you who follow me, you’ve seen pictures of my garden and know it is a haven for wildlife.

My aging hands hold this ancient soil crusted spade,
wood handle now faded, once painted bright yellow so you
could find it in the sea of resplendent greenery and dappled shade
You gripped it Mother, with the same graceful hands
that comforted me as a child and wiped away my tears,
as you painted monkey blood on my skinned knees
and took away the sting, always there to ease my fears
When I lose the spade in the garden as you once did
I often wonder, when my time on earth comes to an end
should I wear a golden daffodil dress so you can find me
in the vast sea of wandering souls who’ve moved on?

Author’s Note: My mother always called mercurochrome ‘monkey blood’ when I was small. *This is one from my archives as I am missing my mom today.

“He who contemplates the depths of Paris is seized with vertigo.
Nothing is more fantastic. Nothing is more tragic.
Nothing is more sublime.”
― Victor Hugo
I’ll never forget our tiny bedroom
Deep in the heart of Paris
A cloud bed filled with pillows of down
Draped in faded covers soft and worn
Where jet lagged sex was the best
A drowsy languorous feast of flesh
Falling asleep, dreaming the dreams of gods
Bread and cheese and red wine flowed
Tall windows muted sounds of the city
While the river Seine below lazily rolled
Red velvet roses wilted on the battered dresser
We counted the days until they would fade away
And so would we, drifting back to reality
But oh! What memories we made
