What Will Remain

In these times of uncertainty and pain
I often ponder what of this will remain
When we emerge from our sheltered abodes
And begin to live a ‘normal’ life once more

Will we have learned anything of value
From this heart-wrenching deathly lesson
And be kinder, gentler, treading lighter upon Mother earth
Determined to leave no lasting marks where we were
But what I truly wonder will this newfound wisdom last
Or be nothing more than a passing phase?

A Garden of Eden

The garden once a battleground

Between her and the southwest desert

This Texas girl told nothing will grow

In this scorching desolate place

But with her strong will she persisted

Never giving up on her dream

Now today what once thought a silly folly

A beautiful garden of Eden thrives, lush and green

The likes of which this dry desert has never seen

The April Wind

On My Walk- Mesa,AZ

The April wind came to visit here today
Whispering wisdom as it sang through the trees
And though I couldn’t see it I felt it rushing past
Leaving in its wake the music of rustling leaves

Closing my eyes, I listened to discern the melody played
I heard the grey mockingbird and cooing of peaceful doves
And remembered a happier time of carefree bygone days
When this wretched disease had not created such a stifling haze

Then I heard the message the wind spoke through the trees
This too will pass, let prayers of hope shine brighter still
For all the world to see and so shall it be

Aftermath

Tall grass grew between the railroad timbers. The last time a train passed this way was probably back in 2020 during the Covid-19 outbreak.

Lucas followed train tracks because they always lead somewhere. Long ago, he got into the habit of counting steps. Each night, he wrote down the number of steps that day in his moleskin.

Finally reaching the train station, he could see no one left and no one came on the bare platform. A faded sign read, Welcome to Salt Lake City.

He had seen only one human on his journey, a week back in Denver. ‘Going home to Virginia’, the man said and went on his way. His parting words were, “If you’re going to SLC, look for the grey spires in the sky. That’s the Mormon temple and there’s folks living there.”

Spotting the spires, Lucas walks towards them.

On And On

Writing memories with ink’s stain
As words bleed upon white paper
In morning’s amber light of dawn
While the rest of the world sleeps
Song birds are beginning their day

I put a voice to my wandering thoughts
So long after I’m dead, other poetic souls
May ponder them on cold dark winter nights
When frigid air breathes blue frost clouds

As they drink candlelight cups of steaming hot
Mulled wine to warm their dog-tired souls
They read the words put to paper long ago
And though my flesh, my breath, are gone
My poems will live on and on

I Remember You

I remember you

In autumn when you shined

As a cool wind ruffled your hair

With the turquoise sky reflected in your eyes

Your melodic voice sang a ballad

Filled with crimson colors of changing leaves

While you strummed your battered guitar with ease

The epitome of a gentle soul at peace

You never knew, did you

The depth of my love

But perhaps now wherever

You are you do
