Christmas and New Year’s Day came and went without any raucous festivities. No holiday parties, no Feast of the Seven Fishes, no gluttonous eating or over-imbibing. After over a year of unexpected health issues, taking a breath and awaking each morning are pure joy.
The human body’s capacity to heal and regenerate is an incredible miracle. I regret I did not take better care of myself when I was younger but my cancer scare changed all that. I am comfortable in my aging skin and with it comes an humble wisdom as I savor every moment. This is my year to rejoice and embrace all my life with a fierceness born from facing my own mortality. A brilliant sunrise, a new moon, cold raindrops on my face; delightful celebrations of life.

“Happiness. Simple as a glass of chocolate or tortuous as the heart. Bitter. Sweet. Alive.”
― Joanne Harris, Chocolat
Through the open window drifts
deep melancholy notes
As an unseen cellist plays a familiar song
‘Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah’
And all at once I’m struck
with a heartspur so profound
as the scent of pine rosin alters the air.
Time falls away…
Vague memories become clear…
The way your hands held the hardwood bow
with measured strokes, never missing a note
As it glided across the strings of your guitar
And then how those same calloused masterful hands
with tenderness, caressed my silken hair
leaving my innocent heart exposed; bare
-Bittersweet indeed

The crown she wore was nothing more
than an illustration of inner self-
An ancient garden of floating butterflies
dancing in sundrenched air
Where golden legged honeybees
get drunk on riotous wildflowers
woven together in an intricate maze
of stems and petals and leaves

“And she was fair as is the rose in May.” –Geoffrey Chaucer
Sunshine glows on fair skin
Lights her face with joy- for though
Life has dealt her countless blows
She rises above the noise
Weathering sunshine or rain
She inherited the strength of a woman blessed
With grace to carry on regardless of her pain

“When people don’t express themselves, they die one piece at a time.”
― Laurie Halse Anderson, Speak
At fourteen, you don’t think too much about death;
but then there are days it kicks you in the gut.
Riding to a church meeting with my best friend
her mom driving, all three of us sitting in the front seat
I sat in the middle; we talked about school, about boys
while the radio played our favorite song- ‘Hey Jude
Don’t make it bad, take a sad song and make it better’…
laughing and enjoying the ride, until-
I heard her mother before Judy did
Wait- what did she say? Then the world slowed-
my hand reached for the radio knob to turn it down
and that’s when Judy heard it too-
‘TIME TO DIE’
Her mother kept repeating it over and over and over.
I tore my eyes away from her face and looked ahead
She was driving us into a railroad yard, her foot hard
on the gas driving head on towards a parked train
And in that instant I grabbed the wheel,
slammed my left foot on the brakes.
So, I found myself trying to drive a car
for the first time –
To this day, I thank God it was an old blue Chrysler
with a push button transmission on the dash.
Judy sat in the back seat with her mom who was crying too
She tried to console her, but the tears kept coming
I drove us to the church, and slid the lever to ‘P’
found the preacher; told him what happened.
They said she had a mental breakdown.
Judy and her mom moved away shortly after
but every time I hear ‘Hey Jude’- I remember.

“Love! Love until the night collapses!” ― Pablo Neruda
Let me go mad –
While the sun sits pretty in autumn sky
Let me raise my glass –
to a long life all these years gone by
Let me drift away-
with falling stars on an obscure night
Let me get lost tonight-
For you, the vessel that held my light
now gone forever from my sight
and all that’s left is lipstick on broken glass
