Episodic Memory

Heartbeats pounding, echoing in my ear
tha-bump, tha-bump, tha-bump, pause, pause, pause —
tha-tha-tha bump, tha-tha-bump, tha-bump ——–
Mouth fills with the metallic taste of fear
Arms heavy, heavy, heavy, legs trembling, buckling
head aching, blurry vision, mind wandering
down dark alleys to somewhere, anywhere to escape the sound
Deep breaths in, deep breaths out, still black before my eyes
darting, racing, fluttering
nowhere to run from the incessant beat, beat, beating
of my unpredictable heart, is this the end?
No, no, no it can’t be, so many poems still inside me.

Winter Introspection

“A cold wind was blowing from the north, and it made the trees rustle like living things.”  ― George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

Winter’s peaceful reflection a slowing of the seasons,
when time pauses in the frigid cold
while we ponder where the year has gone
contemplating our life with introspection
having no regrets so much for things we’ve done
But rather what we have not dared to endeavor.

And it’s in these moments we realize that life is but a game
a toss of the ivory dice, a thrilling gamble we brave to play
if we heed those tempting calls, answer with a resounding yes
with certainty thus, when we give our all
Will our life then be forever blessed?

Alone

The brilliant sun was showing signs of setting when Leona eased into her rocking chair. Her bones groaned and creaked; much like the chair who has been her only companion for many years. From the porch, she can see all the way to the craggy mountains breaking the horizon. A cow is screaming across the arroyo; she wonders if it’s the one she lost from her dwindling herd. Well, there’s nothing she can do now. Once the sun sets in the desert, biting cold comes and darkness is blacker than coal. If the cow survives the night and is still bellowing in the morning, she’ll saddle up and ride. Leona is not hopeful; most likely the coyotes or wolves will have taken the cow down. She takes a deep drink from her whiskey glass, closes her eyes and listens to the cow’s mournful song.

For Eternity

Photo by Alexis Antonio on Unsplash

I want to gaze for eternity
upon your molten copper eyes under pale moonlight.

I want to hear your lion’s heart beat
calming the thump, thump, thumping of my fractured heart’s song.

I want to feel the heat of your hands
warming my frightened body, burning fire in my soul.

I want to taste my tears as they fall
while we drown in tempestuous impassioned love-waves.

#Sedoka: Be Still 2

Be still and listen
There are secrets in silence
Illumination will come.

Oh my soul, breathe calm
with solitude comes guidance
tranquil as praying mantis.
